I took mine to Dee's Trim Shop in Plano. They were able to remove the padding from the bottom (and shave some of the padding off the back) and then pull the leather cover back on tight so it doesn't wrinkle.
Just an option....
I need to do this soon, with the new roll bar my head almost touches it when driving, I have done some seaching on the board and have a good idea how to do this...
For those of you who have done this...did you shave the top or bottom section of the foam. (i am talking about the part your touches)

I am looking for the TCB way to do it...

I don't have leather so I don't have to worry about wrinkling

I've done a foam-ectomy on both of my Miata's. The first one I used an electric carving knife. The second time I used a single-edge razor blade. It's not hard. Remove the hog-rings (there's about a million of them), pull the covers and start carving. When you're done, use zip ties to attach the covers back to the seat frame. Take your time and you will be OK.

I read that one and am using it as a guide. I also found another write up for an NA seat where he cut the upper portion of the seat bottom instead of the shovel bottom. My question is...would cutting the upper be better than the lower on the seat bottom?Originally Posted by sammm
I will be using the wife's electric turkey knife.

On my '92, I cut the seat bottom and the back rest. On the '99 I've only done the bottom so far. IIRC the '92 seat back had a removeable piece of foam right under the cover. The '99 is all one piece. I'd start with the bottom and see how it feels and how much it lowers you. The back rest is much easier to get to if you decide to do it too.
Cut the bottom (shovel section) first. You can cut the top if you have to, but then your seat cushion fabric will lose form (ugly) and wear prematurely.
Thanks for the reponses...I think I'll just cut the shovel section.

Let me know if you need to borrow an electric knife... I bought one just for doing my seat and haven't used it since.
