Thread: Practicality attacks...

    Default Practicality attacks...

Well... I hate to say it but I'm starting to consider selling the Miata.

Before you freak out, here's the deal...

I'm getting back into some of my old hobbies (RC flying mainly) and the Miata is no longer suitable for hauling stuff. As in I'm lucky if I can get one of my planes in the car and a helicopter in the trunk. And with several purchases coming up, I KNOW I'm going to be struggling.

    Now the bad part.

    I'm looking for either

    1. Minivan
    2. Station wagon
    3. SUV that gets at least REASONABLE mileage

I said years ago that I would shoot myself if I ever bought a minivan. I guess it's time to break out the paintball gun.

I was planning to buy a van off my mom but she needs the entire price right off and I can't afford it. Plus I doubt I could afford to pay the upkeep and insurance on 2 vehicles at once, at least right now.

    Now the good news!!

When I move into a permanent address, I want another Miata to fix up. I just can't use one right now.

    Now here's the main question:

What do you think my NA is worth?

    1992 C-package, 158K
Black w/ white stripes, paint less than a year old.
    Tan interior, leather seats.
Black top, less than a year old in perfect condition.
Timing bump to 16 degrees BTDC
Custom intake (had to be done, former owner did a useless intake mod)
Custom dual exhaust (also comes with stock dual exhaust. Well kinda stock. Modded stock. Whatever)
Has the chin spoiler, also painted.
Everything but AC works, except both windows were converted to manual.
    CRI air horn.
    Sylvania Silverstar headlights.
Painted aftermarket mudguards on all fenders.
Removed cruise control and windshield cleaner bucket thingy.
About to remove non-working AC, I have another compressor that works.
The car is very clean on the outside. The interior is okay but the seats are a little rough (leather). The carpet is getting worn a bit. Needs a little interior TLC.

The engine runs VERY well and I can tell a big difference after the timing bump. I'm running Royal Purple oil now.

In my humble opinion, I think this would be a great car for someone wanting to get into Miatas. I haven't done anything with suspension, brakes, roll bar, or anything like that yet. Fresh paint, new top, perfect wheels and good tires, and a great engine should be good selling points.

Only exterior problems are something weird with the front bumper cover causing it to bow out slightly. Not noticeable except when you look closely.
Other than that, the rear license plate surround has a crack on the right side.

The car was crashed once (low speed) and had some body damage. NO FRAME DAMAGE at all, I drove it for weeks like that before I could get it repaired. All body work is great.

    What did I miss?

    I'm thinking about $3600

Here's some old pics, the lip spoiler is no longer there and obviously the car now has silver Enkei wheels.

Your price may be a bit high, my 92 with less miles and a working A/C sold for less than that.....

I considered a trailer.... but... I'm at the field usually a minimum of 3 times a week and that would be a freakin PAIN IN THE to use every other day. Plus I don't really have a place to park it. On the other hand... I wonder how big of a plane I can put in it :)

Look at it this way... Most of your flight gear could live full time in your trailer. Would it take more time to load all of your gear in and out of your wagon/van/whatever, or drop the trailer on the ball and plug in the trailer lights?

Seems like a fair price to me. Good luck if you do decide to sell.

I really thought I would be flamed to hell and back if I even mentioned a trailer...

What's the max weight a Miata can tow? As in how big of a trailer? I may actually consider it now that it's been mentioned. It wouldn't be secure where I live though... Plus my planes average about 60" wingspans.

Though I really wouldn't want the extra strain on the drivetrain. It'd probably be best for me to just pick up a van for now. I dunno. I hate the moments BEFORE you make a decision.

Technically, I believe Mazda does not condone any towing with the Miata. With that said, the trailer linked to above is used by several here for autocrosses. I have seen a Miata pulling a travel trailer that had about a 70 lb tongue weight and weighed in around 900lbs total without a problem. There are also 2 companies that make bolt on hitches designed for the Miata.

I probably have some of the most experience towing a trailer behind the Miata here, and I would disagree with the 900lbs statement.

A typical 300-400lb autocross trailer is an easy tow, and shouldn't be any problem. I put more than 6000 towing miles with a trailer of this weight without any problems.

I also had a larger trailer for awhile, one that was probably pushing 600 pounds (it was also had a larger frontal area). This one was definitely noticeable, and probably more than you would want to tow on a regular basis. It also completely blocked rearward vision, which was

I once towed a ~1000lb trencher/trailer combo about 10 miles round trip from the local equipment rental place. This was VERY heavy behind the Miata, and I didn't feel comfortable towing that much weight at all. Keep it under 400 pounds, and you should be fine.

This trailer offers more space (4'x8') for your 60" wingspans. You could cover and floor it 3/8" plywood for weight savings.
