Don't see anything that would imply that here.
Is there a law saying if you use an after market air filter, the brand of filter has to be one on the "list"? The place close to my house won't past my Rx7 w/o a K&N!

Sounds like the inspector thinks he's living in Cali...
You still using the original air box?? Or is it an aftermarket intake??
I'd go somewhere else.

Throw the OEM box back in for a day and take it in? Otherwise you dont have to have a brand name filter as far as I know.
Tell the inspector to go take a dive off the nearest tall building... and then go find another shop.
Inspector on a power trip... Same sorta dumba$$ I had to deal with who said the FACTORY tint on the top of my truck's windshield was illegal.
Suck it up and take it to a different shop, or go back to that one on that guy's day off. "Never argue with an idiot. They'll only bring you down to their level and beat you with experiance."

How can I be so thirsty this morning, When I drank so much last night??
This has been a rule since the early 80's. I had the same problem on my 80 Dodge Challenger with a Weber Carburator and K&N type filter. The original reason was for the heat riser tube to warm up the air for better combustion on cold starts.

I don't think modern cars have heat riser tubes. My '74 Capri had one which is why I'd install the original air box at inspection time then switch back to my open air filter the rest of the time.
Still, plenty of blokes driving around with aftermarket air intakes. (like me) who have never had trouble passing inspection.
Isn't there something about a CARB sticker or something like that that you need to have on aftermarket accessories???
No doubt Gab took his car to the wrong place!
It was a question Sparky...
Thought some states also required certification, and would accept a CARB sticker for compliance.
