Europe only. Called the Qashqai. Sort of a baby Murano. I can't see why they wouldn't sell a bunch of these in the States if it was offered. Doesn't seem like it would cut into Xterra sales, either.
I mean, if the question were: "This or a CR-V?", the answer is: This. (no offense, Iain)

Four engines will power the Qashqai: a 1.6-liter four-cylinder gas (113 hp/118 ft-lbs.), a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas (138 hp/148 ft-lbs.), a 1.5-liter diesel (105 hp/177 ft-lbs.) and a 2.0-liter diesel (148 hp/236 ft-lbs.). Mated to those engines will be a myriad of gearbox choices, including a five- and six-speed manual, a six-speed automatic and a CVT.
I'll take a 6-speed with that 2.0 liter diesel.

Nissan management is confident that there's no demand for SUVs in North America.
I got 35 MPG+ out of my 82 Isuzu Pup diesel with a five speed and 2.2 liter engine.

So this appears to be a replacement for teh X-Trail Nissan SUV...
Down in Mexico the X-trails are on every frikken corner. Very nice, smaller 4cyl SUV. I believe they'd sell well if the US, but they're not offered. I'm suprised that Nissan continues this trend with it's new product offerings..

How can I be so thirsty this morning, When I drank so much last night??
Reminds me of the 70s, when market forces demanded GM sell a Vega for less than a Caprice despite similar manufacturing and engineering costs. Why should Nissan federalize a low-margin cute-ute when Americans will still pay stupid money for an Armada with a clock and some bling (i.e. QX)?
