Given the transfer case issues with Bean's Element and my CR-V (which share the same drivetrain), I'd have to give the nod to the RAV4. Besides, you can get a much more powerful engine in the RAV4.
As far as small 2007 SUV's go, these 2 are probably the top choices.

Given the issues with the transmissions on my previous Honda Civic and my Cousins Oddesy, I would have to shy away from anything honda right now.
Why not a Mazda CX-7 TURBO![]()

Yep... good comparison here.
Toyota Rocks! 27,000 hard miles on my 4Runner and it's never back to the dealer for anything but oil changes and tire rotations, and has been averaging 20mpg during it's stay with me!![]()
The New Highlander is also very nice if your need a bit bigger SUV.

Ya finally going to get rid of that little red sports car and get yourself something a bit more age appropriate?![]()
Come to think of it, my '98 Prelude got a new tranny @ 28k miles, and my '00 Accord got one at 78k miles. Can't say I've had great luck Honda products in the last decade.![]()
We've thought about replacing our CR-V with either a 4Runner, a Highlander, or a CX-9.

I should add that we have been VERY happy with the Murano... 35k miles so far... never had a warranty claim. Also love the CVT, and will continue to as long as it is under warranty... then I'm sellin' it!![]()
A point of note...While the CX-7 and Murano look a lot alike, it should be noted that the Murano feels a lot bigger inside.
I'm gonna have to give the nod to the Toyo

Thats pretty solid for an SUV.
The only down side I saw in the review Titus posted is that there isn't as much storage capacity for the CX-7, which wasn't all that much smaller. 30-59 cubic inches compared to 35-80 cubic inches. The other thing is offroard capability, for all practical purposes who really goes offroad, and if you did and were serious about it, you wouldn't be in any of the 3 vehicles in that review. All I can say is that if I was forced to own an SUV I would want one that could handle better, if storage capacity wasn't an issue. And if it is you
Blah blah blah!
Oh, no, we're losing Sammm (or Mrs. Sammm, I guess) to the SUV dark side.
If you must, then I also like the CX-7 idea.
Snip from an Edmonds writeup on the CX-7 (aka. Edge) : "The Toyota delivers better observed fuel economy — 19 mpg compared to the 16.6 we measured in the Mazda. Oh, and the RAV does all that on regular unleaded, while the CX-7 needs premium."
Also on a side note. The CX-7 is the only one that has rollover protection as standard equipment. As well as it out performs in the crash test, ect.

That sucks on the mileage. Just a note though, the CX-7 does not = Edge. As I understand it, the CX-7 received it's own new platform designed within Mazda pulling elements from the Mazda3, Mazda5, and Mazda6. The larger Mazda CX-9/Ford Edge/Lincoln MKX crossovers use the Ford/Mazda jointly designed CD3 platform. I believe the CD3 is a derivative of the Mazda6 platform.
