Thread: Secure center console

    Default Secure center console

I'm working on a way to make my center console storage more secure, by integrating a steel box and lid into the stock setup. I'm just kicking this around right now (let's call it "study hall doodle stage"), but does anyone already make such a thing? Would anyone else be interested in this?

I don't know if anyone already makes it or not. Wouldn't be too difficult to make a steel box in side existing console. I have a welder and sheet metal brake if you need some assistance.

I would be interested in it, if for nothing more than something to keep the damn lid on my console, these things are notorious for breaking at the hinge and an OEM lid is like 70.-80. bucks last time I checked.

Why not just lock it in the trunk and do the temporary trunk release disable mod?

I did it and use it all the time.

Sounds like it would get hot in the summer and end up burning my elbow. Ouch.

I'd keep the factory armrest - it would just be bolted to the lid of the steel box. I'm going to do some more doodling when I get to work.

But I think I'll do the trunk lock mod in the meantime...

That's what I thought you were after Tricky. Leaving everything stock on the outside and building a box that inserts in original cavity and using original mouting screws to secure. With 14GA steel, you would lose very little space. Can even make it to secure your gas and trunk release. Box in a box method.

    Exactly! Box in a box...

Sure, fairly straight forward for sheet metal work. Spot welding and making it look pretty will take the longest. But I estimate it could be finished in a day after templates were made.
