I'm interested, but I won't know until around 4:00 on Monday whether I'll be able to... Really interesting articles/excerpts in SportsCar... I'm certainly interested to hear more.
I'm thinking about going to this lecture, especially since I spend a significant portion of my life already in Woolf Hall (which is the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering building on UTA's campus). Either way, it sounds like it's going to be an interesting lecture, and one that might actually have some application to the hobby that so many of us spend so much time on.*The Racing & High-Performance Tire*

*A lecture by Paul Haney
Date: Monday, 23 Feb 2004
Time: 7:00 pm
Location: room 311, Woolf Hall, 500 West First Street, UTA campus.
Driving instructions: Take I-20 or I-30 to Cooper Street in Arlington.
Drive to the north side of campus. Turn East on UTA Blvd. Go two blocks
east to College Street, one block south from here is Woolf Hall, but find
a parking place first. A parking ticket will not be a problem as long as
you don't park in handicapped.
------------------------------------------------------
You have seen his new book The Racing & High-Performance Tire, you have
seen his articles in SCCA's RaceCar magazine, now you can hear him in
person.
Paul Haney, author of Inside Racing Technology and Racing Technology, and
the monthly newsletter TV Motorsports <www.insideracingtechnology.com
<http://www.insideracingtechnology.com/>>,
will present a 1.5 hour lecture followed by a question and answer period.
Lecture topics:
How a Car Turns a Corner - an explanation of how a tire generates a
lateral force with a slip angle and how that allows a vehicle to turn a
corner with control at speed.
Rubber & Rubber Friction - a short history of rubber tells about the
discovery and development of this amazing material and introduces some of
its unique characteristics. Rubber's viscoelastic properties produce
sensitivities to temperature, sliding speed, surface texture, and
vertical loading. What's the real reason why there's more grip off-line
in the rain?
Tire Design: explains how tires can be flexible but strong and why
inflation pressure is so critically important to tire performance and
reliability.
Race Tires - describes scrubbing, blistering, and graining. Explains how
to find the right inflation pressure.
Tire Behavior - explanation of how a tire produces lateral force and
turns a car as well as camber thrust, induced drag, aligning torque, and
the friction circle. Learn the real reason why wide tires produce more
grip and why tires are load sensitive.
Balance and Control: Explains understeer and oversteer, wedge, and why a
front anti-roll bar is so useful.
------------------------------------------------------
The lecture is part of a national lecture series sponsored by SAE and
hosted by UTA Formula SAE. The presentation is open to SAE members, SCCA
members, and the public. Paul will make his book available for $40 cash
at the event.

Anyone interested in joining me? I can show you where to park and meet you somewhere, then show you how to get to Room 311 in Woolf Hall... ironically the site of a Machine Design II exam I've got later this afternoon. :P

I'll be there. Wanna go eat afterwards? Nizza Pizza is great. Suggestions?

Well crap.
Playing with the Porsche Club all weekend didn't leave me enough time to do all the homework that I needed to do for this week, so I don't think I'm goint to make the lecture. Sorry, guys.

Did anyone make the lecture??? How was it???
I made it. Very interesting.
