    Default AC question

so my air conditionings are going bad i think.
at night or early in the morning it blows cold, but during the middle of the day or when i get out of work (5 ish) the air that comes out of the vents isnt as cold anymore. its cool air not cold. i know the ac works just i think its running low on refrigerant. the compressor clicks on.

do i need a refill of freon?

My '94 had similar performance, it worked but not that great. I just got some cans of freon from wally world and filled it up. It helped some.

It's cheap and worth a try. If you've got an older car with R12, I guess you can take it to a shop or do a conversion to the newer stuff.

Miato what year is the car again?

My '94 was doing the same thing, and it was just a little low on freon (actually R134). There's a guy down near Greenville and Mockingbird in Dallas that I can highly recommend for a quick check/refill.

Saw r134 at Walmart for 6.88 a can. Check under the hood to see what refrigerant you need. My book says 95 and up used 134. Borrow a vacuum pump from AZ and draw vacuum overnight. If you've got a leak you'll need to isolate it with some of the UV dye charge.

If compressor is coming on, sounds like a recharge issue. Take cam76034's suggestion and isolate leak, if there is one. Then recharge. If it does turn out to be anything mechanical related, let us know. I have a complete system sitting in the garage and will be glad to pass any part you might need your way.

Very well could be R-12, why don't you ask the previous owner maybe he knows...

If I'm not mistaken, 134 has bigger quick-connect fittings at the check points, whereas R12 uses regular schrader valves (threaded just like tire valve stems).

    Anyone? Anyone?

R12 has a slightly salty taste, kinda like the water at your local public swimming pool.

Okay, do NOT try to taste the freon. Conversion kits come with bright red and blue caps for the low and high pressure ports. Under the hood coming out of the passenger side of the firewall, next to the windshield washer reservoir will be two aluminum tubes, one fat, one skinny. Fat boy is low pressure side, skinny is the high pressure. If you follow them you should be able to find the caps where you would hook up gauges and recharge. See if it looks like anything has been replaced (ie: the caps) and get back to us.

134 does have bigger fittings, he could run down to AZ and compare what he finds in my prev. post with what they've got on the racks.

That problem will also directly affect the performance of the A/C.

i think this is the problem why the AC is weak. but it still never really was cold even at startup. before it even warmed up. where can i get the fans. both dont come on

Probably a relay or a fuse instead of the fans...

well the fan on the driver side of the car was dislocated or something, because i couldnt turn it with my hand it was locked up. so im pretty sure i need a replacement fan for that one. and the fan on the pass side it turns but doesnt come on (ac fan maybe?)

Yep the passenger side is the fan for the A/C. Turn on the A/C and see if it works!
