Yes, you can add a hitch.
I have an NA (see signature) and bought this one for my tire trailer and bike rack.

I am pleased with the hitch.
I am considering adding a hitch to my Miata to carry my bikes instead of using a removable trunk rack that could scratch up the paint (also the trunk rack takes up all the space in the trunk when I'm not using it). Can a hitch be added to a Miata? Which type would be best?

On the track, I am fearless.
If you were as slow as me, you wouldn't be afraid either.

Yes they make reciever hitches, but they are usually 1 1/4" recievers instead of 2" and they have a very limited tounge weight.

Someone else will probably post a better hitch or bike rack, since there are a few that have experience with this.

I was actually going to post this too... I'm about to start biking again to try to get a bit more exercise. I've gained 25 lbs since moving

.... no Miata
I live right by the start of the White Rock Trail. It's fantastic. I wasn't expecting the hitches to be that expensive. Grrr. I want a newer bike also. I guess buying a Miata didn't satisfy my urge to spend money on toys.
I have the De'lan hidden hitch on my miata. I use it to haul my race tires with a tire tail. The install was fairly easy (thanks cone-cerned). I'm not sure if there is a bike rack for the hidden style hitches, but if it can support the weight of 4 wheels and tires, I think a mountain bike won't overdo the tongue weight on a De'lan hitch, hidden or regular.

It needs to be able to handle the rack and two road bikes. This shouldn't be too hard as both together weigh less than 50lbs.
Here's another option from our friendly neighborhood roll bar makers:

I looked into most of these when purchasing my hitch. As always, monies dictated which one to get. I love the 'De Lan hitch, as it is Miata specific, but also pricey for what it is. I actually used a hitch for a B2000 truck, Class II receiver. Tongue weight is higher and had the option to get 2" or 1 1/4" ball. I chose the 1 1/4" so trailer would not need modification. I cut the ends off and fabricated my own brackets to bolt into original tow hooks and welded to hitch. Everything bolts in using existing hardware for tow hooks. Not necessarily best route to go, but out of necessity, I have been pleased with being able to get the mobile shop to and from events.
