Unless the tires are dedicated for a single race or qualifying weekend, no need to shave them. You ask about tread life, shaving takes that away. If you plan on using them for more than one event, don't shave them. Grip is better at first with shaved tires, but again don't last as long. Miatas are light, and easy on tires to begin with. Enjoy the R-comps for as long as you can. Shaving does play a role in the heat of the tire at first. You are not scrubbing them in, and they are not building up tire slag. The build up can actually make the tire hotter and greasier. Again, if you scrub the tires in properly and heat cycle (allow to sit for 48 hours- off of the car) and take care not to overdrive them at first, they will last longer than shaved. All tires have a drop off point, either shaved or not, and how you drive them, dictates as to how long they last before dropping off.
Actually sometimes a full tread tire can be ruined very quickly because the extra tread allows more tread squirm. That makes more heat which can cause the tire to chunk, and ruin its self very quickly. I guess like you said if you pay attention and dont over drive the car you can hopefully avoid that.
Agreed, can actually ruin tire quickly. Scrub in and heat cycle to combat this. Shaving is for those who pit, change tires, and get right back into the action. The build up can actually make the tire hotter and greasier.

I don't need money for that. I will not shut up- and I will not go away. All info was passed through guys that I respect and have learned a great deal from. Bobby A., Shannon, and Jack from MSR, my father (a PCA club instructor), and uncle (32 years NHRA- 4 time National Champion). If you are afraid of the answers, don't ask the questions. So I appreciate the fact that maybe you don't agree, that's fine, we're all individuals here. Take what you want, and leave the rest. However, if you think that I would loyally support anything with leaders that have an IQ of a muffler bearing and tact that is 'bout as sharp as duct tape, then think again.
