Default Help! My Miata is sloshing

Yep, after all this rain my car is sloshing. There's water trapped somewhere; sounds like on the drivers side. I don't even know where to start looking or how to drain it. Any ideas?

Check the trunk first, the deep sides behind the wheels. How you get it out depends how much water there is. Scoop it out with a slurpee cup, sop it up with towels, or just tilt the car up on its side*.

Shop vac with the small slot attachment. Will suck it dry in minutes.

Okay...how about a bit more basic. I have a Miata. It has a trunk. Beyond that, I'll have to start randomly poking and pulling on things.

BTW: Is there a good mechanic manual I could get that would start me on the DYI road of ownership?

There are rubber drain plugs in the trunk of the Miata, if that's where the water is. Check the drain holes on the bottom of yours doors too. Water could be trapped in there.

Does it sound like it's in your door? When do you hear it sloshing?

It's on the driver's side, but I swung the door to see if there was water in it, and it didn't sound like there was any in the door itself.

Not sure if you have an NA, NB, or NC, but on the NA, there is a big deep crevice in the trunk on the opposite side as the battery. You will need to lift up the carpet on that side to see it. The jack is in there, and the crevice goes down even deeper than the jack. I would check here first. The other things to check are the front fenders (Read here for details), the top drains (try here for info), and pull off the door panel to see if there is water trapped in the door.

No problem, glad I could be of service

Actually I'm about to drive my car too, so I'll probably hear a lot of water also. Mine also has mildew in the trunk, I just found out about it

Okay, after inspection, the trunk is completely dry, so is the door and all my floor boards. Maybe it is the drains. I was trying to find them per the links, but can I get to them without taking the top off? I was trying (and failing earlier). The plastic brackets holding the carpet to the car can just be popped out, correct?

Found the drain holes....now to find something to shove down there (carefully).

Well at least you know what's staining your carpet; I have some sort of sticky gunk I don't want to identify out of fear.

Yea, I'll have to acquire a metal coat hangar somewhere.

There seems to be a plastic cover over the drain holes; that can be popped off with a screwdriver or something, right?

Guys... everyone is forgetting the obvious...

On the bottom of the car, on each side, on the pinch rail itself that runs down the length of the passenger compartment there are 2 sets of drain holes. Poke a straight length of wire or coathangar up in there to unclog them. You'll probably see a 1/2 gallon of water come out.

Well, after a wiggle to the most posterior drain hole with a minuscule allen wrench quite a bit of water came out. Hopefully that got it all and tomorrow I'll be lighter and less sloshy
