Thread: Crank Gear Tool

    Default Crank Gear Tool

The 90's crank pulley developed the death wobble yesterday at the TMS event and chucked the alternator belt. After reinstalling it tossed it again in the middle of 35 resulting in a very long ride home. Does anyone have a "crank holding tool" for loan or rent so that I can brace the crank enough to get the bolt out of the crank and attempt the keyway fix? Alternatives appear to be have one made, breaker bar against the pavement, bump starter method and chunk of angle iron against flywheel. All 3 are viable options (for now) vs $2100 to Mazdacomp for a long block.

    Thanks

    Hi Steve,

The bump starter method works perfect. I've done it a few times on various Miatas. The key to remember is to unplug the CAS so you don't accidently start the car.

If you can't fix it, Johnwag has a complete '93 engine for sale.

What area of the Metromess are you in? I have an engine hoist and am in the Lewisville area if you decide to swap the motor out.

I have a crank gear tool. I know it works on a 1.8 and I'm pretty sure it should work on a 1.6. Let me know.

Thanks folks. After confirmation here and on the spec board I think I'll try the big ass breaker bar method. Motor replacement would of course be ideal but I'm helping pay Mangino's buffet bill at KU right now (daughter is a hawk) and funds are tight. Checked my parts stash last night and I managed to find everything but the woodruff key (go figure) so a call to the dealer is in order today.

    Steve,
Breaker bar may or may not work. It tends to just slip the clutch. Starter bump works just fine. I actually have one that I made several years ago, but it won't work on a small nose crank. Good luck!

    Steve,

I'm sure you'll have it back together by then, but if you need a ride at the next scca, you have one here.
