Thread: an intercooler question

  1. #1

    Default an intercooler question

This is going to sound stupid I'm sure but here goes.
With the cooler temps as of late my car is running between the C and the half way position on my temp gauge.
    Gary's intercooler works very well.
So is this normal running that cool? impressive

Intercoolers only lower intake temps. It has nothing to do with engine temperature.

How good is your heater working? It's possible your thermostat is stuck in the open position.
    ...and across the line.

the heater is working fine, it has a new thermostat in it.
but I know that sometimes that doesn't mean anything.

When did the new thermostat go in? Is it OEM, or one of the ones that open at a cooler temperature?

Don't really know, I got it from Gary when the SC/IC went in.

The JR superchargers used to come with a cooler thermostat. I believe they stopped including them in the kit, but I wouldn't be surprised if Gary still uses them.

As I recall, there were debates on the subject that lasted for years over at Miata.net.

Could be the 160* thermostat. Alot of track guys use it. I have a 160 thermostat on my miata currently. I've found out last winter that the heater doesn't blow as warm, though.

I believe that is the case Jon, i will ask Gary..I know we put in a new Tstat just dont know what degree's it was rated for...now that you mention it the heater isn't quite as warm. still not bad but it hasn't got real cold yet.

What is the general arbitrary rule? 7% drop in inlet temp going into a compressor inducer is an 11% drop in outlet temp coming out of the exducer? Something like that...translate that to less heat being trapped (and then absorbed via coolant) in the cylinder head...and I would be willing to bet all my nickles and dimes that a 30 degree drop in air temp going into the throttle body is at least worth a 10 degree drop in engine coolant temps on a forced induction car.
