    Default Cobalt brake lights

The other day my girlfriend got out of her car and I noticed only the third brake light was burning. So I checked the bulbs and fuses and everything looked good. The last thing I had her do was turn the car on and hit the brakes. All three lights worked fine with the car on. Does that sound right? Why would chevy do that?

I can sell her a nice Acura to replace that Cobalt. All of the brake lights work on the Acura.

Also if your trying to get rid of her you cut the brake lines, not the brake lights.

All right, I'll tell you the real story, but you can't tell Consumer Reports... I really don't want GM suing me for revealing their trade secret.

The Cobalt uses the same basic wiring harness layout designed for the Cavalier in the days prior to the third brake light. In those days, the brake lights shared a circuit with the radio and cigarette lighter. When they had to add the third light, they found that it could cause a small fire if someone hit the brakes while listening to the radio and heating their lighter. As a fix, they re-wired the brake light to use it's own relay on a separate circuit from the rest of the system.
