Thread: Charging NiMH RC car batteries

Default Charging NiMH RC car batteries

OK... so I made it over to Mike's Hobby Shop (cool place!) and picked up a couple of fresh batteries for the Bruiser, but they're NiMH instead of the trusty ol' Ni-Cads. I get home and notice that the label on the battery says I must use a NiMH charger. What, praytell, is the difference? And what's the going rate for one of these?

BTW, I called back up to Mike's and one of the guys told me I could use my old charger, but to constantly monitor the battery and make sure it doesn't get too hot - sounds to me like a good way to start a house fire...

Sorry, I don't know the difference between the chargers.

Anyone else know what's different about the charging process of NiMH batts vs NiCd batts?

Its the current supplied during charging and the sensing for overcharging. Don't know specifics though.

    Ah, ok.

My old charger is a "dumb" charger with (I assume) no form of feedback to prevent overcharging. I guess I'll have to pony up for a new one... unless somebody has a used one they're looking to get rid of!
