Thread: Rear View mirror

    Default Rear View mirror

Ok... on my 1990, how does the rear view mirror come off..... is it a standard wedge base where you shove a knife/ screwdriver up from the back?

I'm wanting to install a gentex autodim/ compass mirror in the miata like i've put in my other cars. I'm not sure if i'll be able to mount is where the oem one was, but any reason a windshield mounted mirror would be a bad idea?

The gentex mirror is nice, but it is a little large for the car. I have one and it is a definite improvement at night when a SUV/Pickup come up behind you.

If you can find one of the compact models, I would definitely go for that. As for the windshield mount, 1999 and up were mounted on the windshield.

Actually it was 96 and up to be accurate.

    Almost forgot...

MMMiata sells a bolt in replacement for the 1990-95 Miata with interior lights. No compass or Autodim but it is an easier/cheaper option.

    BR's the man...

Don't get me wrong, I love my Gentek mirror and would never take it back out. But every once in a while it does get in the way. I just give you the warning in advance so you will know. I think they do have a smaller version out, but it may be an OEM only type of mirror.

There are plenty of Miata guys that have installed them and would probably let you get a feel for it. Mazda also offered an auto dimming mirror as an accessory on later models that you might look in to. It may be smaller as well.

I'll look around. I know the Donnely Auto dim units tend to be a bit smaller, but being the "explorer" i am the compass built into the Gentex unit is usefull. Its saved me hours of being lost in my other cars.... I think I'll snag an oem style ford gentex off ebay; can get one for $30 shipped or so....

I believe that's another thing they are known for; swapping parts from different years resulting in combinations that never existed new.

    You are joking, right?????

Gentex Auto dim mirrors have a ground wire, a hot wire, and a reverse override wire which i don't bother with.

How the hell do you catch the car on fire? Run the hot wire into the gas tank?????

Don't ask me how you catch the car on fire... Maybe by not fusing the hot wire?

But in any case, he's not kidding. Some members here have had some interesting issues with that place - transmissions swapped out, tools left behind in the car, and big brakes swapped out for tiny tiny brakes... and more.
