Unhappy My Doggie Story *Bad Ending*

Our adopted Boxer, Maggie has been coughing quite a bit. Initially the vet tested for heartworms which came back negative and treated her for Kennel Cough.

She had some relief but has been progressively getting worse. Second visit to vet, chest x-ray came back clean and was put on antibiotics and other meds.

Again, she get a bit better but then quickly worsened on Sunday. Monday the vet takes x-rays again and comes back saying her x-rays were horrendous. They were completly white and illegible because of all the fluid built up around her heart.

Today she got blood drawn and blood count rules out pneumonia. She was given a Lasix shot and seems much better. We will try this medicine for the next 3 days and try another x-ray. Her breathing is still labored and she has no energy.

The ultimate prognosis isn't good. She either has cancer or congestive heart failure. The CHF can be handled with medicine if she responds well to it. She has maybe two years at best, a day at worst.

The vet guesses she is 7-8. We've had her for the last year.

We are doing well though. The big thing is we do not want her to suffer. If it gets worse we will likely put her down.

Aww man, that is a horrible situation to be faced with. As a lifelong pet owner I know how you feel.

Definately sorry to hear that. I can only image how I would feel if one of my pets was in a simular situation.

Praying that she makes a complete recovery.

Sorry to hear that. I had an ugly situation with my dog and didn't think he would pull through but some amazing vet work, 3 days in the ICU and $1,200 later he did. Don't give up.

Took another trip to the vet to see if the Lasix improved her condition. It didn't. The vet has tried to remedy all the most likely causes and some not likely causes with either no change or increasingly worse condition.

There is an option of seeing an internist for $1100.00 but chances of a cure are very small. At best we could extend her life for a year or two but with lots of suffering for Maggie.

We decided to let her go before it got more painful for her. Rough times.

Sorry for your loss. We have no pets because my wife's last dog was poisoned, and she can't handle that sort of thing anymore.

    Sorry to hear about this.

By far this is the worst part of pet ownership... the burden we have to bear to help them through to a peaceful place.

I am sorry for your loss.

Been there, done that! It was not easy. It is never easy to let go, ether a pet or a family member. I know, some of the pets are better than family!

Sorry William, my family has had many pets over the years. I can relate to your decision and know its a tough one to make.
