Thread: Harness question

  1. #1

    Default Harness question

I'm going to order a Simpson harness today, but I need clarification on one point. Are there different harnesses for attachment to a harness bar as opposed to harness tabs mounted on a roll bar? Or can the same harness be installed either way?

    Thanks

when attaching to a roll bar or some round tube, you need a metal thing like shown on lower right on this page

    http://www.crowenterprizes.com/Pages/Install.html

    to loop the webbing thru

notice you have to do it a particular way so that as stress is applied, it actually tightens onto itself

can't tell you how many I've seen incorrectly installed

without knowing the dimensions of the belt and for you in the car cannot tell

doesn't look like that one is wrappable because it has the tabs sewn onto the end (pix is fuzzy)

you need one that is naked on the ends to wrap around something with the metal clip thingie

look at this pix -- see the tab is just looped, not sewn, so it can be taken off

    http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta~partsort

you need to buy one that is long enough for the wrapping (from crotch, over shoulder to bar, around bar, with a small amount left over), and be sure the belt angle over your shoulders is OK

meaning how high is the wrapping point with respect to the top of your shoulder -- as shown in the earlier installation picture link I posted

if it were me, I'd get those measurements and call Crow Enterprises

I've bought nice stuff from them at prices lower than most big name people

same SFI certification, so why not TCB?

FYI...when drilling the hole for the anti-submarine belt anchor, watch out you don't end up in a frame channel. BTDT.

to avoid that kind of thing, I used a piece of 3/16" thick steel angle iron (from Lowes) about 8" long and drilled holes on either side using good bolts and grade 8 fender washers to attach it to the floor

then one hole in the angle iron for the sub belt

The photo you posted is a V-Belt setup to be used with a single mounting point like a harness tab. You need a H-Belt setup for a harness bar.

Last question: what length eye bolts do I need? They offer 50 mm and 20 mm. What length do I need to get through the floor? I'm guessing the 50 mm...

I'd say the longer ones. We install longer eye bolts at the shop.

I used 50mm eyebolts and cut off the excess length with a cutoff wheel/grinder. 20mm may not be long enough depending on where you go through the floor. Be sure to back up the underside with some stout metal plate. I used the 4x4 plates from Saferacer. I often see people use large diameter washers that are too thin and they deform badly. I can't imagine what they would do in a wreck.
