Anyone root their Android phone?

I picked up a used HTC Dream that runs Android 1.6. Reading online, many people recommend "rooting" it so it can be upgraded to 2.1. Anyone have any experience with this? Is it really worth it?

Do I have experience? No, just did some reading about the bootloaders and building ROM's.
Have I done it? No, no need to on my phone.
Is it really worth it? The extra features that have been added since 1.6, would make it a worthy upgrade in my book.

I see no reason not to... the FCC even said it's legal to do so now. You'll get a lot of nice features in 2.1
