No. The timing cover is there to keep debris and fingers out.
I am gathering parts to do the timing belt/water pump - also hoping to try to fix the oil leak somewhere on the front too while I am at it, are the cam seals and front crank seals, valve cover gasket and CAS o-ring the only ones that seal the in the oil (besides the oil pan and head gasket), or does the timing cover gaskets seal in oil too?
Worst case if it is the pan gasket, can the oil pan be dropped with the engine in place?

Ok, thanks! I figured that, just wanted to make sure the back of it where it touches the block was not a possible leak source

FWIW i'm tracking down an oil leak close to the front of the engine as well. In my case i'm 80% certain that my 2nd cas o-ring has begun leaking oil, channeling around the valve cover gasket and out somewhere in front of the header.
I need to look at it again, but last time after I cleaned it I could see a little oil making it's way forward again. Surprisingly a lot of oil actually.

I have a pretty good leak as well, I hope I get it with everything I bought.
