Default Just want a 20 man Miata drive

Just wanna go cruising with a bunch of Miata's down the highway, or a good road somewhere. If any is available around fortworth / dallas, I'd love to join with my '99. Let me know!

I'm not far from Lake Worth (stationed on NAS Fort Worth live in Saginaw). I could give you a GPS route (loop) that goes down though Granbury up FM4 and then back to Fort worth via some good back roads in Palo Pinto, Parker and Tarrant counties. :) Even take ya to a covered bridge.

20 Cars is a bit much when talking back roads, it's nearly impossible to keep a group that size together and to sync everyone's bladder and stomach. 5 car groups would be ideal. 10 max. When I go to big events I won't ride or drive with the big groups I'll split of on my own and meet them for lunch or dinner. I probably couldn't swing it this month but next month would probably work out pretty good.

The best drives I've attended were designed so that you were given a route map and places to stop for lunch.

"Here's the route; see you when you get there, if I haven't already eaten and gone on the next leg" sort or deals.

http://www.dfwmiata.com/showthread.p...-second-annual will get you in the car and running around with a bunch of other cars.

You mind PMing me the route? Not that my car runs right now, but I'd like to have it saved somewhere for future reference. I know I'll forget this thread by the time I can drive my car.

And yes, 20 cars is a bit much for back roads. We used to have about 10 at most (usually just 5 or 6) on our faster NJ drives. If we had more than that, we usually were forced to go dumb slow the entire time, or unofficially split into groups based on comfort levels as we went.

    True enough.

I'd be interested too... any good places to eat along the way?

Agree 278%. Plus, it's good to know the route and keep it relatively simple. It's not fun to get lost and/or stumble through residential neighborhoods/construction/lots of stoplights.

Can ya'll open Garmin GPS files or .GPX files? I'll draw up one route/loop tonight or tomorrow and PM it to ya'll if you can.

As for places to eat. Stephenville has really good BBQ there in town as well as the typical fast food joints. Once you get on FM4 there really isn't much past a little gas station in Lone Camp and another gas station with a grill in Palo Pinto. After that there's pretty much nothing if you stay on the back roads till you get to the Azle area. You could dip down into Mineral Wells where theres differnt choices from Mexican Food to BBQ style places and Fast Food. Or Weatherford which also has a lot of options.

Also I suggest that anyone who does a group event to read this

    http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/fl...sch/index.html

It's mainly for motorcycles but applies to any group motor vehicle event on public roads

"Here's the route; see you when you get there, if I haven't already eaten and gone on the next leg" sort or deals.
    That's my kinda group event.

When I was at the Miata event out in Big Bend over the weekend the only time I drove with the group one time the whole weekend and that was between Alpine and Presidio where there was nothing but Marfa in between. Some spots of that were even clusterfucks and it's a fairly straight road. After that we were getting on the river road. I gassed up grabbed some snacks and water and left 30 mins ahead of everyone else and just met with them at "The Lodge" in the national park then split again and met with them in Terlingua for dinner.

It's much more fun driving a really nice road when you aren't worried about if the group is staying together, if that other guy behind you is going to brake in time, and having to deal with slower drivers in front of you that like to creep though the corners and hammer the gas in the straights.

    Another note:

Communications- Some little FRS or GMRS radios with a headset, the headset is mandatory in an open top car by the way, can make the trip much easier on everyone.

I'm a TomTom guy I guess I'll just have to wait till my car works and bother you to lead the way then. Pretty sure I can get some kind of app for my phone to remember the route.

If you have some kind of program that can look at .GPX files which most computer gps mapping programs can you can use that. TOM TOM is kinda limited in what it can do. I've got a Garmin Zumo 550 (motorcycle GPS) which a few years ago was like the Ferrari of road going GPS units. I've programed in a 5 thousand mile trip before and only had to pull a map out a few times while in the city.

I could post up the turn by turn directions from a fixed point in Fort Worth but you'd lack a map to look at.

I was trying to avoid having you do turn by turn directions, but if you're cool with that, I can put those into my GPS easily enough. Just figured that if you have to actually type it out, that could be annoying and not worth the effort (I'd be hardpressed to do it myself if there's a lot of turns to be made).

And for the record, if/when I ever decide to get a new GPS it will not be another TomTom. For me or the woman. Or my mom...crap, I've bought a lot of Tom Toms.

I wouldn't be typing them by hand I'd be cutting and pasting from my GPS program.

Rough Draft is done. Took about 10 mins to put together. Not sure on everyone's fuel situation but I'm looking for gas around 200 miles and usually put in about 8 gallons at that time. If I'm the shortest range Miata here I'll base our fuel stop(s) on my range.

Lunch is another thing. If we leave Benbrook (initial way point there is a quik trip) around 10 or 1030 we'll be to Stephenville around lunch time and can eat at the Hard Eight BBQ place there. Then we'll leave there and either fuel up there or grab fuel when we cross over 281. If we fuel up in Stephenville I don't see a reason why we couldn't make it back to our final stop even using backroads at the 199/820 intersection at another Quicktrip on one tank of fuel unless someone gets around 150 miles per tank for whatever reason.

I know of some good roads out south of Granbury, past Cresson. Its basically the opposite of what you've drawn out. Either way, looks fun.

Im down for some spirited driving!

I'm always down for hitting twisties with a few others, but unfortunately my free time is very limited for now. (7am to 4pm Monday and Wednesday)
If I know a month out I can probably take the day off though.
