Question 2002 NB Cooling Fan Acting Foolish.....

Is the cooling fan relay in the box under the fender next to the under hood fuse box?

^It looks like the 'ears' need to be spread a bit to get past the 'tangs'.

I just don't seem to have the magic touch to get these to release..... Is there a special tool you need to use or something??

^I'd use the skinniest, flat screwdriver I have....maybe even a pocket knife blade. Release one side and hold it back while you release the other.

Couple of finishing nails pushed up on those tabs finally got it to release.

    Was a PITA.

Well kids it is looking like I may have been chasing Rainbows on my Relay theory.

    Relay Checks out OK.
Yellow Wire from Relay to fan ohms out.
Black Wire Fan to Chassis Ground ohms out.
Hook a 9V battery to Yellow wire sometimes ya get fan sometimes ya don't.

Decide to back-probe the Fan connector with a T-Pin and I can get the fan to work everything I give it 9V.
Haven't taken the Connector apart but odds are good that is where the problem lies.

What rainbow () are you chasing exactly? Car running hot?

No drivers side fan. Must had died near the end of the day Saturday she was fine until after 8th run heading back to Padock. I think that was the last time the fan worked.

(Also made for an exciting ride home.)

If you cross the wiring, does it work?

Yes and No. That is the issue.

I can power the fan with a 9V battery to test it and it will work every time.

The cars wiring doesn't always play along. If you check voltage on the yellow wire which is the one that powers the fan it goes live as soon as the car gets to around 210 degrees. But not completing the circuit to ground.

Pretty darn sure it a break in the wires in the connector at the driver side fan, but I'm freaking melting so I'm done with it for today.

Looks like this connector got a bit warm. This is the connector that plugs directly into the drivers side fan.

Looks like the "Heat" got all the way in the fan motor as well.

The fan will run when hooked to voltage. But I'm beginning to wonder if it wouldn't be a bad plan to change it out as well?

I can't see your pics from work, but if it's melted, replace!

I'm thinking the same as you. I am a bit surprised it never popped a fuse.

And if it got that hot, I'd suspect the fan is bad and drawing too much current.

Which brings another question : Do you get a used Fan Motor or do you just get a new one at $174.91? (p/n B6MC-15-150)

Used many be no better than what I have now but my TCB sees the price for the new one........

How long are you keeping the car? How much do you enjoy working on it?
