    Default New head, many questions

I finally broke down and picked up a rebuilt head this morning . It is a BP05 casting which was used in the later 97 Miata and the Protoge. The head has the freeze plug in the front, so I am going out on a limb and say that it came from a Protoge.

The questions that I have are:

    1. How do you tell the Protoge cams from the Miata cams?
    2. Does anyone have any spare valves? I need some junk valves to protect the valve seats while I polish the combustion chambers.
    3. Does anyone have a torque wrench that measures in/lbs?

It is definately a Protoge head, and it is going back.

The casting number for the Protoge head is BP05-9-1, and after much research I found the casting number for the Miata is BP05-6-1.

Here is a rundown of the problems.

    1. There is no hole for the lower bolt of the coil pack
    2. There are two mounting tabs right where the coil packs go
    3. The coolant fitting on the rear of the intake side for the factory oil cooler is different (looks like it has connections for heater core and oil cooler)
    4. The cams are definately different according to some quick measurements with a micrometer.

You know Kags1.98 just got a 3-angle valve job done on his '99, here in town. You may want to see whom he had do the work and just get your Miata head refreshed!

The place that sold me the protoge head is going to rebuild mine and have it for me tomorrow morning.

$250 to completely rebuild the head
$65 for ALL the gaskets needed during a head swap
