Thread: 6-Speed Shift Knob????

    Default 6-Speed Shift Knob????

    I put the new knob on the POS I unscrewed the OEM and put the new on on! Time spent about 3 minutes!

    But now I'm trying to do the one on Vivid and the knob will not come off? (It was spinning thank to the hack job done by Hiley) How in the world do I get this thing off the car?????

    ooooooooh... that sounds bad...

    If it's spinning and it won't come off, then they broke the knob loose from the part with the threads. EEEEK!!!

    I just finished cutting the leather off the knob and removing the foam. There is a metal structure remaining, and I still can't get it off (it just spins)? Are the threads plastic? Is it a screw on style knob??? BTW the remainder of the knob is all that is spinning!

    AFAIK, it's a screw on... Should be the same as JRW's or wagner's...

    The replacement's a screw-on, right?

    No the momo uses a bushing and 3 set screws (Universal)

    Does your OEM knob have metal threads in it or is it plastic threads glued in the metal body??

    hmmmm....

    I have a nice dremel that will slice through the metal body...

    Once that is off it should be easy to remove the plastic threaded piece inside...

    Yea not a bad ideal but I figure first I'm going to drill a hole in the metal body so I can get a pin into the plastic to hold the plastic as I try to unscrew it. I didn't have my camera at home last night but there is at least a 1/4" of material on the base of metal body than it gets larger as it gets to the top of the shifter.

    You would have to grind out a ton of material, and since the knob is on you can't get the console out of the car to protect it, not to mention everything else in the path of a grinding wheel…….. What a PITA!

    Here is what an OEM Miata shift knob looks like when the foam and leather is stripped off in an effort to remove the knob.......

    I plan to see what I can do with it later today.

    I Won I Won! I beat the evil shift knob! Drilled a hole in the shifter in the knurled section and was able to pin the plastic interliner in place so I could unscrew the knob!

    What a PITA!!
