I think the set of wheels and tires I got from Tirerack were around 75 to ship.
Perhaps you can try to negotiate the shipping... otherwise he's looking to make some extra profit.
Unless of course where he lives is truly that remote that UPS won't come by as easily...

When I bought my race wheels/tires off Ebay they were $100-ish & came in 4 separate packages.
I figured it was around 20 bucks per package...maybee I got shafted as well.

Doesn't Ebay charge their fee as a percentage of the winning bid? I think he's just using the high shipping costs to: A) keep the winning bid lower, and therefore keep ebay's percentage lower (while still getting a good price for the wheels), and B) use the high shipping as a "pseudo-reserve".

This is a really common eBay trick. Most people don't read the whole item description (including shipping cost, which can -- and usually does -- include some handling charges).
So you bid on an item because it looks like a great deal. Then when you win, you discover the outrageous shipping charges and you've been had. If you try to back out, your eBay reputation gets trashed -- because you're in the wrong. Your bid is a contract, and you agreed to the BS shipping charges.

Just remember that you negotiate at your own risk unless the seller changes the shipping cost on the listing.
Don't get me wrong, he might be a nice guy who just wants a bunch 'cause he doesn't really want to ship them, and when you talk him down he'll stick with it. Just be careful as you're technically responsible for the listed terms if you win the bid!
