Just wanted to show off the new exhaust I got. I have a friend, Mike, that builds roll cages and exhausts for BMWCCA club racers, and he wanted to give a Miata exhaust a shot.

It's a straight out design with the muffler at an angle to accomodate less aggressive bends. The muffler and the tip are stainless steel Magnaflow components with 2.25" aluminized tubing in between. I'm running what might be considered a race (louder) version with one muffler. Mike would be able to add a resonator to tone the exhaust down some. He can also make full stainless units, pretty much what ever custom stuff you want like bigger piping for your supercharged/turbo guys.

Here's some pics and I'll post a couple of videos as soon as they are hosted. I'll be at the S2K event this weekend so I'll see you there.

Very nice! How does it sound?

It's got a very deep tone on startup and idle and screams up top. It's got a little bit of a burble to it when you let off the gas. It's got a bit of a drone to it at around 3k rpm, but that's b/c I'm running with out a resonator and a fairly small muffler. It sounds very mean.

If it was for a daily driver I would suggest adding a resonator. You'll hear it this weekend, but hopefully I'll have video before then.

Yes, it's 2.25" from the cat back. I was throwing around the idea for track guys to have a V-band cat section that could be removed easily and be replace with a test pipe. Not in E-stock of course.

OK, so POS is setting up a tech day at my garage to clean it up and he's bringing the beer.

Looks like a nice piece of work!

Just out of curiosity, what is the angle on those bends? I've been doing a lot of work with exhaust, intake, and intercooler pipe routing, pressure drop, and flow calculations lately at work. One thing I've discovered is that if a piping bend is more than about 50-55 degrees, then a 90-degree elbow in the same location typically has little additional negative impact on flowrate and pressure drop.

How much is this exhaust going to sell for Sparky??

These are the number that we came up with after talking about it for a while:

$325 for race exhaust (this is what's on my car)
$425 for full stainless race exhaust
$375 for street (with extra resonator)
$475 for full stainless street (with extra resonator)

Mike would like some feed back on the pricing, be honest and realistic.

I think it would be best to talk to Mike about exact pricing. The best thing is that he can probably do anything you want. We had talked about a completely straight back pipe with a resonator and a turn down behind the back bumper. I say go for the side exit exhaust on the POS racer.

I had just washed the car. The thing that really surprised me was how deep the tone is when you start the car and at idle.

Good videos, I have wanted to do that with my car since I got a camera that takes videos.

    Exclamation Update

So after running the exhaust for about a month now I just wanted to give an update. When the car/muffler is cold the sound (race system) is a little raspy, but as the muffler warms up it mellows out a lot and seems to be quieter at cruising speeds than when Mike first installed it.

Overall, I'm loving the exhaust the exhaust! Let me know if there is any interest in the exhaust, NA or NB. BTW, the pricing that I was talking about earlier was for full catback NA exhausts, NB would differ (especially if it is axle back).

Anyway even if you're not interested, Mike was hoping to get some honest feedback on pricing. Thanks!

One more thing, Mike will be fabbing a roll bar for me soon, so be on the look out for a new thread on that.

    :-D
