Thread: Where to buy aluminum?

    Default Where to buy aluminum?

I am attempting to make my own offset license plate bracket like this one. I need to get a small amount of aluminum. Home Depot does not carry what I need. Anyone know of a local place to pick some up for cheap?
I was going to bring this thread back from the dead, but decided I would try and make my own

T6 alloy or similar...I don't know much about gauge but something strong enough to hold the plate on.

    You got some laying around?

T6 is actually the temper designation, not the designation of the alloy content. Click on this link to learn something about aluminum temper designators.

For what you're trying to do, 6061 (the most common Al alloy) ought to suffice, although I'd take whatever POS happened to have lying around cheap.

BTW, here is a link to a gauge conversion chart for sheet steel, aluminum, strip & tubing, etc. Be careful - 6 ga. sheet steel isn't the same thickness as 6 ga. aluminum!

Nicely show up and ask if they have any scrap pieces... doubtful, but it might work.

You could also go this route but it would cost more.

Another source if you need aluminum tubing, bracket material, and more... Texas Towers sells it to people making custom amateur radio antennas. They are over in Plano.

Just look up local metal fabricators. They always have something laying around they are willing to sell- if they work with aluminum.
I bought some from a shop in Kennedale a fews years back.
