Wireless Internet Help/Recomendations

So the laptop I'm using here at my apartment is hooked up to our wireless server. It internitently goes down sometimes. Anyone have some tips, besides hardwiring it in (it's my roomates computer). It's only 3 feet from the source.

DHCP or fixed address? Is security enabled on the router (MAC/WEP/WAP)?

Brand of card notwithstanding, the first thing to do is change the channel on the access point. Trial and error isn't too bad here, since there are only 12 choices.

However... Linksys cards aren't reliable on Sony Vaio laptops. D-Link cards aren't stable on Vaio G series laptops.

What hardware are you using?

I run an IBM t21 and a linksys card and it occsisionally does the same thing..

as does the linksys PCI card on my dell.. (but less often)

I think they just do that :)

2 things....

1. Site Survey... 2.4GHz phones, video extenders, baby monitors, and microwave ovens ALL create interference that can cause major havoc with a wireless connection. I have a cheepy wireless card that has a 'wireless spectrum' monitoring option to help see the interference.

2. This can also be caused by radio incompatibilities. Upgrade your Access Point/Router and client card firmware and drivers to the latest & greatest.
