Hang them from hooks in the garage from the ceiling (bikes, not the kids ). They can't get to them without your help and they are safe at night.

Crimes of opportunity. Someone is walking and wants to get somewhere faster. Check ditches/ravines/gulleys/creeks as that's where the PD tends to find them.

Ya, that's what happened to me when I was say 10. I ran inside for about 10 min to get some things leaving the bike in the front yard and it was gone when I came back out. Police found it in an alley in the next neighborhood.
