Thread: Is this a clutch problem? Troubleshoot

Yep, if you are in gear driving and the rpms pick up without accelerating then it is the clutch disc. If the slave/master cylinder is leaking then you will have trouble shifting.

If the clutch disc is getting worn out but is not completely gone yet, then it will probably still work well when cold.

Try driving for a while and get the car warmed up plenty then stop and engage the brakes.

Put it in first gear and slowly release the clutch pedal.

If the clutch disc is good the car should bog down trying to fight the brakes and eventually it will stall if you release the clutch all the way.

If the clutch disc is worn out, then the rpms will be allowed to rise instead, and if it is completely worn out it will free rev and probably make noise.

ditto, its the clutch. i got my centerforce cheap (almost as much as stock) and its got nearly the same pedal pressure.
depending on the miles of the car i would replace the master and slave anyway. im having to replace mine now

The wife has been extremely unreasonable lately, insisting that she get to drive her Christmas toy, so haven't been able to get into and underneath it yet. I did pick up the O ring for the CAS . Lousy forecast for this weekend tho.

BTW I forgot to mention that I did talk with Steven Boyd/Miata Solutions. Agreed that it is probably the clutch going out, perhaps from oil seepage getting to the clutch via the main seal. Pretty much ruled out seepage from the CAS o ring, or slave cylinder acting up. Don't that figure.

Is it still being intermittent or is it slipping all the time now??
