Thread: How often do you change your fuel filter?

Default How often do you change your fuel filter?

The NA I just got has 155K on it and judging from the condition of the transmission and diff fluid changes I have done so far, I would guess the fuel filter hasn't been changed every 30K either. I recall reading an article about how clean gasoline is these days and that it eliminates fuel filter replacements. Corolla has a (supposedly) lifetime fuel filter.

So have any of you changed your filter and noticed an increase in performance? Mileage? Did you go with Mazda filter or other?

One time during ownership. Do it outside, wear eye protection and prepare to get gas in your armpit.

I changed mine when I bought the car in July. It had 78,000 miles on the odometer. sammm is right about the gas bath, be prepared.

If you were as slow as me, you wouldn't be afraid either.

I did mine once, at about 105k miles. It is a nasty job - not a tough one, but definitely a nasty one.

Not sure if it was done in the first 125k, but I have never changed mine. See updated mileage below. ??????

The only thing I noticed was a chemical burn on my arm from where the gasoline had spilled.

The car? Didn't notice any difference at all.

I noticed that the spec would idle better... but hey... that filter was clogged with crap from the car sitting for the better part of a year with the engine apart and only a rag taped around the ends of the gas lines.

How did you fit Bean's can under there? How high does your jack lift the car???

It is cheap insurance to change the filter every 30-50k miles. Although gasoline may be cleaner nowadays, that doesn't mean tiny particles of dust won't fall in the filler neck every time you tank up (which is a lot of times after X00,000 miles). Should your filter get clogged, you will notice increased everything by replacing it. As far as brands go, OE will never be wrong and I've also had great luck with NAPA brand.

It is part of the major maintenance at every 60K miles!?

I haven't tried this on my car yet, or replaced its filter, but on many cars the fuel system can be depressurized by pulling the appropriate fuse while the engine is running. This would reduce the spray hazard.

    YMMV
