Thread: Back surgery

    Default Back surgery

Last month I slipped on an icy patch while walking down the steps outside my apartment. My feet went out in front of me and I bounced down about 4 steps on my butt. I bet it was pretty funny to watch but the pain was excruciating. Looking back I should have gone to the hospital right away, but I'm tough, and made it back upstairs and took some pain medicine and muscle relaxant, laid down, and re-medicated until the pain was dulled. I saw my doctor the next day, she actually agreed with my treatment and gave me more Rx's. After x-rays (and a follow-up MRI) it turns out I have a compression fracture - I have a vertebrae that's "squashed."

Other than back pain, I've been doing fine. And with the pain medicine I can get out and about without difficulty. If I didn't have my pain meds, I never would have made it out last Wednesday evening.

So, Monday the 12th I have an out-patient operation to re-expand the vertebrae and fill it with bone cement. This is supposed to be a very easy procedure with a very short recovery time (we'll see).

Wish me well. I'll be back online in a few days I hope.

Thanks for the kind words. So far, so good. I expected to have increased pain just because of the procedure, but I feel fine (not all-better, but fine). There are just two band-aids on my back where they poked 2 holes, and no incisional pain.

Hopefully I can actually get back to work in a couple of weeks!
