Thread: A good way to quiet the Miata...

Default A good way to quiet the Miata...

I got this suggestion from CraiginTX and it made a HUGE difference so I thought I'd share.

Get some pink home insulation, place it in two plastic bags and seal them up with some tape. Now stuff a bag on either side of the gas tank under the rear deck.

This actually made more of a difference in my car than the sound deadener I applied.

So much so that I actually heard my headrest speaker much better. The car is significantly quieter and for you weight conscious folks, this adds very little weight.

Great idea, I'v noticed lots of vibration noise from that area, especially without carpet on package tray or in trunk.

Might want to check it for dampness every now and then. I could see it trapping moisture from that leak you have and encouraging rust.

That's fixed. Besides, the plastic bags are sealed to prevent moiture.

Part of the allure to a roadster is the road noise. It was designed to allow that noise into the cabin of the car.
    Blah blah blah!

+1 ... if you want quiet, go buy a Honduh or an RX-8!

Great thing about the Miata is it can be changed to suit it's owner.

Mine is a daily driver and I like my music. I don't expect Lexus quiet and still get lot's of roadster noise but less drone. In fact, it's better because I mostly hear the exhaust note from the tail pipe.

Yes, I did this to my car and told BR about it. No I'm not trying to turn my car into a Lexus, or even a Honda. I really like the sound of my engine and exhaust - it's the incessant drone of the tires and the resonance of the exhaust I can do without.

This mod cuts the drone by an enormous amount - and makes it easier to hear the engine and the exhaust note from the tailpipe. Definite sound quality improvements - so much so that I'm even more strongly leaning toward a Borla or other aftermarket (probably louder) exhaust. (Especially since I'm less worried about the dreaded 3500-4000 rpm drone if I have the top up).

Besides, this mod has the perfect qualities for any Miata mod - cheap, easy, effective, and reversible. I've got less than $20 invested, it took me about 15 minutes to do, including finding the tools and R&Ring the shield over the fuel lines, and I love the results...

Hey....3Bean is not only quieter but slower than me

My Goodwin midpipe adds quite a bit of loudness but with the Ansa duals the car is just right to me....

RX-8 is actually pretty quiet as far as wind/road noise but there are TONS of rattles everywhere, door panels, glove box etc. S2000 has tons of wind noise from 00 to 06.

I had to take out my midpipe due complaints of noise at the local Autocrosses. I actually liked being louder than a mod car. Loud pipes save lives.
