Default I don't like property taxes

Ugh... Ok, Just recently bought my 1st house... GD taxes suck!!

I know you guys probably are used to this, but I just got my 1st "official" property tax bill of my life, and now I'm remebering why renting was so nice...

That and I'm thinkin I may live in the *wrong* little area...
    City of Ft Worth
    Tarrant county tax
    Tarrant hosptial
    tarrant college
    Northwest ISD

all said and told all that adds up to 3.33157%

I gotta do this every year too don't I?

    Ok, rant over...

Have you filed for your homestead exemption? I live in the same neck of the woods as you and I can feel your pain.

We just got ours as well, and it went down slightly this year. Of course, that doesn't make it any easier to cough up such a big chunk of change every January.

Honestly, I have no idea... Keep in mind I'm new at this!

Fliiping around websites apparantly I live in about the most complicated location. My property address is Ft Worth, my mailing address is Keller. My physical location is in Tarrant county, but my taxing School district is Denton County.

I was originally told I didn't have to do anything for that when I bought the house, but looking HERE it appears that the mailing address thing may have messed that up for my house...

Ugh, it just gets more complicated!

When you call up your place on the TAD website it will show all the fun stuff. (This is my house):

    026 City of Fort Worth
    099 Regional Water District
    220 Tarrant County
    224 Tarrant County Hospital Dist
    225 Tarrant County College Dist
605 Cfw Pid #6 (Residential Accts)
    907 Keller ISD

Then a below that it shows Exemptions (if you have any).
    Exemptions: General Homestead

Definitely. I'm suprised your realtor or mortgage broker didn't mention it to you.

The homestead exemption is like a free - and often sizeable - deduction on your property taxes.

I believe you're only able to apply for the exemption after a full calender year of owning the house.

    I may be wrong.

My parents briefly thought about doing that on their property in Colleyville, but when they looked into it you needed to have something like 6 head of cattle to qualify.

Yep my Ex Brother in law looked into that as well for the 9 acres he had, we were going to get cow suits and dress up nine Chihuahuas!

Get the homestead exemption well worth the effort!
Q: Do I, as a homeowner, get a tax break from property taxes?

A: You may apply for homestead exemptions on your principal residence. Homestead exemptions remove part of your home's value from taxation, so they lower taxes. For example, your home is appraised at $50,000, and you qualify for a $15,000 exemption, you will pay taxes on the home as if it was worth only $35,000.
