My 2k3 has VVT and higher compression that the 99/00 doesn't have. Not sure on the 01/02 - have you checked theboard's garage area?

VVT started in '01.
No changes as far as I know between 01 and 05... but didn't Mazda over-rate the power of that motor at one point and have to revise the number down a little? Might have been when the 01 came out...

Although, I do have to say it'll run on the regular stuff but run badly. The gas mileage you get from running premium is higher enough to offset the cost difference so it's not worth trying to run regular.
