I tried using Castrol 5w30 high-mileage in both the Miata and Civic. I had the cold start tick in the Miata and the Civic just did not sound as good as usual. I just put in Castrol 10w30 high-mileage in both, and I have no tick with the Miata and the Civic sounds a lot better.

I don't think a loud squeeling sound followed by puffs of white smoke (not condensation) and a burning smell is a factory feature.

They have TINY passages that get clogged with crap, that's why you use the ATF - cleans those things out very well.

Yup and this is not a new trick either. Had a good mechanic friend teach me this one over 20 yrs ago. Had my first hydraulic lifter engine after several years with solid lifters.

The tick went away after about 5-10 minutes of idle with the fresh oil, just until the new oil got to the lifters.

Bringing this thread back from the dead, I performed the 2Twisty flush last night on the 93LE after experiencing a stuck HLA. Worked like a charm and the car was quiet as could be this morning.
