Upgrade to the Torsen. I have a 4.10 and a 4.30 Torsen. You would just need 1.8 driveshaft and axles.

I think I have a spare in the garage which I'd love to get out of my life. Email me if you want it. I'll entertain interesting Miata-related trades or a low price.

still looking for a diff if anyone has one laying around. im really tight on budget (I'm a victim of the economic layoffs) and really need this car to get from point A to B.

aside from that. i bought an LSD diff from a friend that he said works but makes noises. i just got done installing it and it is LOUD. vibrates the shifter pretty vigorously. does anyone know what to do to fix this, i put in a 90 weight oil with "limited slip differential additive" oil (came in a little bottle)

oh and what oil is supposed to go in the LSD 1.6 diff anyways?

Sounds like it has a bad bearing, possibly on the drive shaft side. I would check and see if I could feel the slightest bit of play.

Might also be too much backlash in the gears and need to have some new shims put in to eliminate the excess. Had a similar problem with my Mitsubishi 20 years ago.

Could also be broken worm gears. It's common on the old 1.6L diffs.

I need someone to make a flared 5/8" coupler with a clt bung cut into it. I'd trade for that, but I'm certain we can work something out. I've lost a job and had to sleep in a car before.

well the drive shaft I'm just about 100% sure is not bad. because i took out the old diff with broken spider gears and put in the used LSD diff that had a noise but still worked (did this just as a temporary patch for this problem) as soon as i hit second gear it started vibrating the shifter and making a loud zipping noise. I dont know what shims are. is that a difficut thing to do?

I'm still unclear as to what type of fluid i should be using for the 1.6lsd diff. I'm being told to use "posy fluid" but when asked no one knows what that is or where to get it.

another question is, is it a bad idea to weld the broken diff. just for now to get by? I'm still looking for a job and really am running out of money so im trying to find the cheapest rout for now.

    thanks for the help guys

Mobil-1 Synthetic Gear Lube (75W-90) is very popular when re-filling the diff.

it just looks like a higher quality 75-90 oil. I'm trying to go the cheapest rout basically something that will work for now. BTW driving the miata around my block i started to smell something burning. like syrup or something.

Sounds like the rear end you got from your pal is toast. I highly doubt any gear lube is going to cure what ails it....

Yup, like I said... the gears sound broken.

Pull the VLSD unit out of the diff and look at the gears that connect it to the driveshaft. You'll find pieces missing.

yep, thats what i did with my original diff. i opened it up and it had some teeth missing. but that made random clunks and random banging noises from it skipping a tooth. but the lsd diff is a consistent whining/zipping noise. he told me it was bad to begin with but i really just needed something to make the car drive temporarly.

anyone know how a welded diff resonds on a miata? good idea? bad idea?
