Thread: Broken Key

    Default Broken Key

I was leaving work today and put my key into the trunk lock and it bent (twisted) 90 degrees. Thankfully I was able extract the key from the lock.

Being as I didn't have a spare key and needed to get to class, I gently bent the key back, used some pliers to flatten it and gently unlocked the passenger door successfully.

Risking a new ignition, I also was able to start the car and drive to school. I turned the car off but the key was stuck in the ignition.

I little finesse and again, I successfully extracted the very broken key a third time. My wife brought me a spare key after class.

Word of warning, inspect your keys! I was unaware of any problems with my key but it bent VERY easily. Also, if you can, carry a spare key.

Very good point, BR... In my experience, Mazda keys are really soft and weak. Right after I got my car, I had a factory key cut at the dealer. In short order, I bent it to the point that it was practically worthless. Now I carry two hardware-store keys - one on my key chain and one in my wallet (since I can't help locking my keys in the car at least once a week).

After 15 years of twisting and turning you'd be soft too!

First thing i did when i got my car was take the one oem key i was given with the car to Bee's Keys on Inwood and had 3 copies cut. One for me to use, and one went to my mom, and the last went to my sister.

I hate the fact I can't just cut a copy of my Lancer Key... has to have the chip in it..... argh

The same thing happened to Barbara, a week or so ago.
She got the key out, but it was the only key for the newest Miata.
I took the mangled key, and had a copy cut, on the outside chance it would work.
Well it did, and it worked like it was OEM.
    no jiggle.
