From what we are seeing I'd say they are close to R compounds.

I have been hapy with the performance of the Kumho XS
    Kumho XS
    225/45R17 $122
    215/45R17 $113

    I would go 225. I HAVE 215 ON A 17X7 rim without issues.

what would you choose for the 17x7.5 rim?
A good place to understand what happens when you change tire/wheel sizes is at www.discounttire.com First click on More tips on the Info Center, then Tire Information, then Tire Calculator.

Will the guy that cut them be paying for the new ones?

    Billy,

I've had Toyo T1R's for a year now. Got about 15,000 miles on them (4000 in two trips to Indy and another 2000 in three trips to Houston) and five track events. They're 200 tread rating and starting to show some wear now. I may replace them before Hallett. If I do I will need to do it soon so I have the new tires scrubbed by Hallett. They're 235/40/17 and may be too wide for your rim but if you're interested maybe we can work something out.
