Thread: Sort of a dumb question

Default Sort of a dumb question

How do you tell the difference in a 1.6 and a 1.8 engine?

I have a '91 that I bought about 3 years ago from a guy who I know rebuilt the engine. He had an additional engine there when I bought the car, but I don't know for sure if he put the original back in or the "extra" one when he rebuilt it.

    It's a long crank engine.

I know the fellow (not well) but no longer know how to contact him.

All is well, I'm just mainly curious in the event I need parts or something in the future.

    Thanx.

If the lettering on the valve cover is raised, it is likely a 94-97 1.8 engine. If the lettering is recessed, and the Intake manifold is one piece, it is a 90-93 1.6. If the lettering is recessed and the intake manifold looks like you can take the top half off, it is a 99+ 1.8. If the lettering is raised, but the valve cover is red crinkle painted and there is a turbo hanging off the side, it is a 2004-05 Mazdaspeed 1.8 motor.

I'll pop the hood tonight and cross my fingers that the VC is red crinkle.....

    (it's not)

Thanks for the info, I figured it was something like that.

Can't you tell from the positioning of the CAS (just guessing)? The 1.8L CAS is on the driver side while the 1.6L are on the passenger side.

That is what I was thinking!

Also isn't the thermostat housing different on a 1.6 from a 1.8? The 1.6 has the sensor screwed into the housing the 1.8 doesn't.

Yes and No, You better check out my 1.8!

A 1.8 swap will use the earlier thermo-housing.

My swap you have to know what your looking at, It doesn't have raised letters either.

Yes, but newbies don't always know what a CAS looks like. I know that I scratched my head the first time some one told me to to replace my CAS O-ring.

    Not on a swapped engine.

I think that applies to most of your car, and frankly probably applies to it's owner as well.

1.6 has a mouse under the hood.

    1.8 has immense, biblical torque.

That should tell ya. Not really .

I have had 3 Miata and I did not know about the valve cover difference.
What if my valve cover(s) have recessed LS1 letters?
Do I go to the head of the class?
    Thanks Titus...

I always heard that LSI on the valve cover indicated a small penis.
