Thread: Aw now what! (Front Brakes)

Default Aw now what! (Front Brakes)

I drove the POS Racer to work today; it has been sitting in the garage since Saturday. So I'm almost to work and I hit the brakes and grr grr grr grr goes the brakes! Sounds like metal-to-metal on the drivers side front wheel, but the pads have been in it for maybe 2 months and max of 500 miles. Grumble, Grumble, Grumble. I wonder if I have a Mineral Wells rock between the pad and the rotor. Can't figure out why it waits until today to show itself.

Hey, sammm... It sounds like that stuff you put on the pads to make them dissolve really worked! Sweet!

This doesn't look good and everything is tight. So how is the pad coming in contact with the hat section of the rotor! Note the shiny line on the hat section of the rotor!

What did you do to my car Sammm?

Did one of the slider-pins snap off? That's very strange!

Nope my theory is the pads are hanging..... Going to look at it a bit harder around lunch.

I also started the rebuild process on the calipers Adam gave me, looks like newly rebuilt calipers might be a good ideal.

I know the pictures aren't real clear, but I figured out why my new Hawk HPS+ were hitting the hat section of the rotor.

The hawks don't use the OEM style shims with the ears to hold the shim pad in place, Hawk just glues a flat shim to the pad, the glue didn't hold and the shim slid down...... & I just gave away my OEM shims last weekend!

Do you really need the shim? If I pull it off the outer pads am I asking for squealing brakes???

For starters, I'd send a nasty email to Hawk about their pads! Am I the one with your shims, or does someone else have them? If it's me, I will get you replacements if you need them.

Yep I plan to send them a note and a couple of pictures. I’m going to go without a shim on the outside, and see how I do.

BTW. Don't worry about the shims, I gave them to you & they are now yours.

*Update I pulled the shim off of both front outer pads(drivers Side & Passanger side). Figure I want everything to be equal on the brakes. Of course the noise is gone, and we shall see if we have any shim issues.

I appreciate everyone’s input! (Except for sammm)

I am sure mazda heaven has some cars with brakes still intact. Might give them a call, in fact, if you want I will go tomorrow and pick some for you...

Thanks Majik but the complete front hardware kit is (NAY0-33-29Z - PAD ATTACHMENT, FRT) $8.80. Figure I'll just get a new hardware kit, to go with my rebuilt calipers!
