Thread: Offset question -

  1. #1

    Default Offset question -

I know I should know the answer already but, just confirm my stupidity, will ya?

The stock offset on 90-97 NA is 45mm. The lower the offset number, say 30mm, the more the wheel will jut out under the fender, correct? So the number is distance relative to a vertical plane created by the hub or the fender?

    Thanks!

Not really... they only come in a 40mm.

I was thinking of spacers just in case I didn't like the way they fit under the fenders. As soon as I can get my grubby hands on some stinking tires I'll know for sure...

40mm will be fine. That's the standard offset for 15" '99+ Miata wheels, by the way.

To answer your original question, less offset means the wheels stick out more. Spacers are for wheels with too MUCH offset (like, say, 55mm).

Ditto altiain's comment. 40mm is fine. 5mm isn't enough to create a noticeable performance or suspension wear difference, and it won't create fender clearance problems unless you're trying to do something really marginal, like fit 205 tires under the front fenders of a 1st-gen RX-7... guess how I know.

FYI, a 205-50-15 on a wheel with a 30mm offset puts the tire just about flush with the wheel well lip. Just about any of the Spec Miata shops sells spacers and longer studs. The above combo is the HOT setup for a Spec Miata......

    HOT as in:

    • The favorite, the "in" thing, the most popular set-up?
    Or:
    • As opposed to a COLD set-up?
I'm not familiar with Spec set-ups!

    Nice little update for ya...

I ended up picking up a set of Hankook Ventus HRII H405's in the 205/50/15. The waiting period on the RS2 is way, way too long... although I did already put in my order for the next batch!!

So far, I dig 'em the most!

    Looks good, 3Bean!

So, now that 3Bean has fixed his brakes and his tires, what are we going to rag him about?
