Thread: Soap & Water Coolant?

    Default Soap & Water Coolant?

Anybody tried using distilled water and a few drops of dish detergent instead of Prestone? They have discussed this to death on the pointy board in the past. Some claim 3-4 drops of Joy will do the same thing as Redline Water Wetter. Anyone tried it?

Got a lot of free time on your hands?

All I have experienced is bad things with water wetter, something that works as good as water wetter just doesn't sound like much of an improvement at all! The stuff made into some Jell-O like slime in the coiling system of my old Corvette, cost me quite a few pennies to go back to good old antifreeze!

Yup, I've seen people on the pointy board say that the Water Wetter loosens up a lot of the crud in the cooling system. I've used it several summers in the 'yatta with no similar problems. It's just that, being a true Cheap Bastard, I could save several $$ by using dish soap as a surfactant. I'm going to try it, so I'll let youse guys know how it works.

How much would the repair cost be if it damages the cooling system?

My opinion is that some things just are not worth the risk to save about $10.

NOOOOO....sand is only to be used as an oil additive. Never put it in the radiator!

I always heard sugar in your gas tank is a good octane booster! :viking:

Actually sugar in your gas tank doesn't do anything. Now sugar in your coolant.

Nope, chickened out. Running a weak solution of distilled water and Prestone. Hope I can remember to strengthen it come winter.
