Thread: Thrust bearing problem

    Default Thrust bearing problem

Well, I had thought I was having an electical issue with my idle, it turned out to be crank walk.... .22". So I am pulling the engine. Dont know whose fault it is, mine or the manufacturer of the shortblock.

What could wear thrust bearings out in 400 miles?

Chris, that really sucks. I'm sorry to hear it.

Almost a quarter inch of play in 400 miles sounds pretty suspicious to me. The maximum allowable endplay in the Factory TSB is 0.3mm, which is about 1/85th of an inch. I think I'd be looking to whomever you bought the shortblock from for a new engine, as it sounds like they sold you a lemon.

    Thumbs down

I agree with Altiain you got a lemon, allowable is 0.01181" and you measured .22" dang near a 1/4 of an inch of play! All of this in less than 400 miles!

Did you get a warranty with this motor??

It will be the same amount as last time.... yes, I have a warranty. I just need to make sure that it was faulty manufacturing...

Looks like I'm shooting the "one motor swap a year" rule in the foot. Thanks for the help guys. I am going to pull alot of the outside stuff this week. I cleaned the garage(it still isnt that clean) and backed the car in there.

I will call the engine guys tomorrow and see what they need.

Nah... that doesn't matter any... it's good practice. You know that at some point one of us will be doing the same damned thing...

.022" not .22", but still out of spec.

Well No love from the manufacturer of the shortblock. Not particularly surprised. So, I guess I will pull the head and intake off of that motor and sell them. Anyone need a 99/00 head and intake?

    What did they say??

They said "We check crank endplay and it left here with .005-.010, maybe you have to much clutch pressure,"

I am liking the idea of going NA for a while more and more....

Hmmm, you just rebuilt that head right? Sorry to hear about the problems. I dont know if I would let the engine quys walk with the excuse of too much clutch pressure. Id let POS talk to them if I were you. Id give him something free if he were mad at me. Let us know when the work is going to be done. Im down for some help.
