Default Grassroots Motorsports - '99 Sport vs NC vs Solstice

Looks like the '99 Sport won!

Of course, the NC and the Solstice don't have 7 years of development behind them, either. Still, it looks like C Stock is going to be an interesting class next season!

Wow.... sounds like the unprepared Solstice was only .2 sec behind the fully prepped 99' Miata. Could this be the '99s last year of dominance?

While it's true that the Solstice and NC indeed had only alignment and tires (no front bar or shocks), you have to realize that alignment and proper tires are going to make the largest chunk of time in preparing a Stock class car. Don't forget that one of the fastest '99s in the country (Kyung and Michael Wooton's car) uses a stock front bar and revalved factory Bilsteins.

That said, I think it's going to be a very tight race, once the other cars are fully developed. The NC probably has the most to gain from a bar and shocks (to combat it's softly sprung, long travel suspension), while the Solstice will probably benefit the most from proper optioning (buying a base model with no a/c and nothing but an LSD), an ultralight exhaust, wheels, and judicious tire choice - while they ran the NC on 245/45-17 (a full 40mm wider than stock), they were conservative and ran the Solstice only on stock-sized tires (245/40-18s). There is room for more rubber under there.

Either way, it's going to be a fun season. I think when the dust settles though, the Solstice is going to end up on top for the next few years.

So are you giving thought to switching cars for '07?

Yeah, but probably not to a Solstice. While I like the looks of it, the ridiculously complicated top - and my natural distrust of GM - would keep me out of one. Besides, I could pick up a low-mileage used S2000 and play in A Stock for less than the cost of a new Solstice... and the tire budget would even be cheaper!

Truth is, '06 will probably be my last season in C Stock even if the '99 Sport comes out on top. This will be my 5th full season with the '99 in Stock (or in near-stock trim), and life is too short. It's time to move onto something else. Whether that's converting my car to CSP or perhaps STX2 (if it is proposed for the '07 season), a BSP MSM (hmm... ), an A Stock S2000, or something else entirely (BSP Evo? ) remains to be seen.

Put some V710s on the car and you won't have a problem.

V710s won't tighten the loose nut behind the wheel!

Best lap times posted here opn the Solstice forum:

99 Miata Sport (National Level car) 39.363 (225/45/15 Hoosier A3S05)
    06 Solstice 39.578 (245/40/18 Hoosier A3S05)
    06 MX-5 40.214 (225/45/17 Hoosier A3S05)
Wow... the NC is a slug by comparison. More than 6/10ths off the Solstice's pace, and almost a full second behind the '99 Sport. Looks like my opinion of the NC (better street car than the NB, but too fat and soft to compete Stock-for-Stock) was spot on.
