Default Miata friendly route to Austin wanted

    Just fishing for ideas here.

Going down that way May 1 and open to suggestions. I've done the I-35 thing several times before and it's time for a change.

    Thanks!

If you don't mind long and scenic, 67 to 281S to 290E will take you there. It's about 5 hours. Went in my friend's 99, I havent done it yet in my '01.

On the way back you can get off 35 at near Carls Corner and take 77 to Waxahachie for a brief stint.

I too am interested in any other routes to Austin and some good drives near Dallas.

    Funny you should ask.

I'm on the trip right now. Logged in from the hotel room. Here's the trip, and it's a great one. Of course you can't be pressed for time. This is not a fast route to Austin.

My first real stop was Coopers in Llano for lunch. (4 hours from Plano) From Llano it's around 75 miles to Austin. The next day (this morning) we took 290 to Fredericksburg.

    I20 past Weatherford to 281
    281 to Stephenville
Hwy 67 to Dublin and Comanche
    In Comanche get Hwy 16
    16 to Goldthwaite
    16 to San Saba
    16 to Llano
From Llano, take 71 to Austin

Just drove the 67, 281 route from Fredricksburg about two hours ago.

The Mrs and I counted exactly 17 miatas driving in the other direction.

15 top down, 2 top up.

    I was in the CR-V.

Don't have a map in front of me, but I usually take 67 to Cleburne, then head south towards Meridian. Pass through Meridian and then head towards 281, which you take south until you get to the town that has the Bluebonnet Cafe. There's a great little road (FM1xxx) that heads into the NW corner of Austin.
