Thread: Mugen header pics

    Default Mugen header pics

I finally found the close up pics of the Mugen header for the RSX.
It's kind of a shame that I want to cover it in DEI wrap.

The welds on the primaries are hand polished in the inside

That's what I said. The pics on the Mugen site don't even do it justice. I would love to get this down the line, but with a $2K price tag that might be one long line. I figure it's probably the best legal NA header I could get for my RSX.

Coupled with a good exhaust around +25 hp. With tuning up to 35+ hp.

Two thousand bucks? For headers? On a four cylinder?!?

Lets see... a header and fre-flow cat for the Miata will run you around $600, and gain around 7 hp. That's about $85/HP. If this one really gains 25 hp, that's around $80/HP.

That was 2000$ + the price of a "good exhaust". How much is that?

I'll admit that the RSX is not a cheap car to build up. Especially since I don't want to skimp on "decent" or "OK" parts. A comparable race header (Toda but w/o cat) is $1250. Adam got an awesome deal on a used Comptech shorty header (4-2) for around $200 (I think).

As far as an exhaust is concerned ideally I'd like to get the Mugen twin-loop. New it runs about $1000. I have heard it on a couple of cars and let me tell you it's music to my ears. It has a nice mellow tone and none of the fart-can or loudness that is typical in aftermarket exhausts.

Also I know that in buying Mugen, I am paying a premium because of the name, but I'm willing to do that to get uncomprimised performance and build quality. I figure since Mugen was started by Honda's son, back in 73, and therefore has been working on nothing else besides Hondas, they probably know what they are doing. Lately the Honda motors are comming out from the factory with very little room for improvement. Not that they don't respond to mods well, but because they have been very finely tuned right out of the box.

Lastly, I want to build my car up as an NA. I would like to see 250 whp which is possible so I am already prepared for the fact that I will get parts without much gain. I mean if I wanted to I could slap a Greddy or HKS turbo on it and make about 350 whp on about 10-15 psi.

Yeah, my Comptech shorty header was just under $200, it would have been ~$550 new. Add in a $100 (or, more likely, $170) test-pipe, and I should have similar performance to Comptech's $900 race header. My reason for going this route is similar to Nexus'; I still want to be legal, if only for a day

I'm also going w/ a name-brand known for their high-price, but for a slightly different reason. Comptech is covered under warranty by Honda, there are even dealerships that sell Comptech-equipped cars (Goodson Acura is the one in N. Texas). Luckily, Comptech isn't as proud of their exhausts as they are their headers, and a new one is "cheap" - $650-700.

There are a lot of cheap options for the RSX too if you go to brands that aren't Comptech, Mugen or Toda. A lot of the RSX crowd use the Strup RH, only $430 shipped new; and most of the exhaust prices fall in line with what Miata exhausts are. Intakes are a little more expensive when you compare the tube/filter setups between Miatas; but take a monsterflow intake for the Miata and add in that heatshield, and the price is pretty close ($200-250 for CAI on the RSX).

FWIW, my goals are 210hp w/ bolt-ons, and then 225hp w/ an ECU. I'm not doing cams as I may go S/C if 225 doesn't make me happy

Yeah, 'cause 225-250whp on a high strung, open-diffed front driver seems perfectly reasonable, doesn't it?

I don't know about his exact plans, but when it's time for a clutch, I'm getting either the Quaiffe or the 06 Si LSD if it will bolt in. It's bad enough at 180whp I got spoiled by my first Miata having a Torsen
