    Default Driving Roads near DFW?

    Ollright, I searched, I didn't find anything.

And I don't see any other section for this to go, besides drives/events which I'm not planning...so here goes...

Do you guys know of any good roads to drive on within, say, 100 miles of DFW?

Locally, I've drove, for the past year or so:

-Las Vegas Trail Exit Las Vegas Trail off 820 Westbound right after your cross over Lake Worth, turn right, enjoy - it was repaved recently.

-Heron Drive Exit Las Vegas Trail off 820 Westbound, turn left, go over bridge, turn left at the first street, enjoy. Tight, very tight, turns...one with no gaurd rail that goes straight into Lake Worth...gotta be careful.

-Navajo Trail Exit Navajo Trail (exit before Las Vegas Trail) off 820 Westbound right after Jacksboro Highway, before you cross over Lake Worth, turn left, then left at the fork, and that is one fun road. You can also go right at the fork, but road is bumpier and not as twisty, but sorta fun.

-Lake Weatherford. I forget the name of the exit, but heading out on I-30 West or I-20, it merges into I-20 and it says "Lake Weatherford, exit # xxx", just take that exit, turn right and you'll be on a semi-sweeping road. Keep going till a stop sign, and take a right, or left, your choice. Just keep turning right/left at the stop signs trying to make a circle around the lake, and you'll come back to where you started...The last turn of the loop [if you turned right at the stop sign] has the tightest, blindest, most fun turns. Lake Weatherford is probably my favorite, at least 10-15 minutes of fun driving, one way, for about 30 minutes travel time from downtown Ft. Worth.

-Aledo. Take I-30 West, and soon after it merges with I-20 (IIRC) you'll see an exit for Aledo. Take that exit, turn left and go over the bridge, go straight. At the first stop light, turn right. You'll stay on this road for a while, and when you pass a church on your right side and the speed limit slows down to 30 or 35mph, you'll look for a street on your left that drops down as you turn onto it. This street, while short, is a nice little detour if you're planning to go to Lake Weatherford anyways, it's smooth and tight. I love it.

-Granbury. This is far out there, but Paluxy Highway is very tight, smooth, and well marked, but only 15 minutes or so for about 1 1/2 hours travel time from Fort Worth. Take 377 South allllll the way to Granbury, then I believe you exit Glen Rose (exit right after you cross over Lake Granbury). Turn right at the exit, then turn left at the first stop light. Highway 51/Paluxy Highway IIRC. Keep going and going for about 15 minutes on the sweeper type road, and you'll see the road fork right near some railroad tracks. Take the right fork to continue on Hwy 51/Paluxy Hwy. Soon it begins to get very tight, but for the travel time, it's all over too soon...but it is the smoothest, best marked road I've been on...just too far away.

That's about all I know of. There's some sweepers in south Fort Worth, and about 30 seconds worth of turns on the south end of 357, and sweepers south of Denton...but nothing to really get you driving. If you got any others, let me know.

PS: I hope this is cool to post, as it's not "racing" or anything, just spirited driving, what the car was meant for.

A very worthwhile drive, but more likely around 175 miles away. This is 54 miles of pure bliss. Talimena Senic Drive

Also, you might try getting in on the Texas Miata Roundup that is happening on the 20-22. in Kerrville.

Closer to home, Take FM 455 all the way accross from the Anna Truck stops to Pilot Point. Head North to Tioga and eat some Bar-B-Que at Clarks Bar-B-Que. Make a post and you can probably find a few guys to make the trip with you... Take FM 121(not to be confussed with Hwy 121) from Tioga East to Van Alstyne and head back south on Hwy 75.

Or head North to Sherman and stop off at the Boiler Room befor continueing on to FM 697 to White Wright.

There are a bunch of great little roads south of Denton, between 35E and 35W. If you go out 635 from Dallas and take the Bass Pro drive exit, that'll turn into 2499 and take you up through Flower Mound. Stay on that till you hit FM407, then turn left. A few miles down, you'll turn right on Copper Canyon Road. You'll go north for a few miles, then you must TURN RIGHT and CROSS THE TRAIN TRACKS to stay on it - at that point it may turn into Old Alton Road. Old Alton will take up on up to FM2181. Turn left to go to Denton, or right to head back to 35E. That's just one... look at the Roads of Texas map (or a MAPSCO) at all the back ways between Denton and DFW and you'll see what I'm talking about. Drive it while it's still country!

I was looking at the Talimena above and I know of several other roads close by that would extend the enjoyment of a day or weeekend long road trip.

My wife and I did the Talimena drive summer before last, in the Yellow Escort. Damn fun, but damn hard to stay within the speed limit. Fall color change is coming up soon. That would be a beautiful drive.
On the track, I am fearless.
If you were as slow as me, you wouldn't be afraid either.

I guess it depends on your perspective of a close by trip. It is less than 500 miles, and in my book, that is a one day trip. If you want to make it a two day trip, Queen Willomena lodge is on the second highest peek in the Arkansas Ozarks. Senery also plays an important part to me. I like to play with the camera at the same time, to give me something to remember. I have taken the trip twice sinceI found out about it back in June. I have also driven up to Tulsa to catch the historic Rt 66. That was not near as fun.

Hwy 281 from Hico to San Antonio was a good alternative route. Burnett Tx holds a lodge called The Canyon of the Eagles. Between there and Marble falls is a flight museum for the Confederate Airforce(or whatever they go by now) and the Long Horn Cavern.

Last year, I drove up to Oshkosh, WI to go to the EAA Airshow. Stayed in Ripon, WI at the college and found more fun in the Horicon Marsh taking pictures.

By the way, I like to take long drives. After all, isn't the miata a drivers car or what?

One of my faves. The wooden one lane bridge is gone but it's still a great route.

I'll look into those roads between 35E and 35W...I used to work at Bass Pro Shops, my first job @ 15, so hopefully I can find my way back.

til about 4:00am on Tuesday nights, the rest of the time around 1:00am

That Silvercreek exit is gorgeous in the fall the trees are gold and red, and in the summer the trees grow right across the road for a long stretch.....I used to love driving out there.

(RE: Copper Canyon Road) Yeah... I was not pumped when they took out the wooden bridge (and after they spent a ton of money to restore it!?!?!). Also, parts of that road were unpaved up until a few years ago. BTW, it's the quickest way around Lake Lewisville if 35E is a wreck.
