Thread: State Inspection Problems

    Unhappy State Inspection Problems

I'm having problems with the "Readiness" monitors for state inspection. My Miata is a '96 and, therefore, OBDII. It's been back on the OEM computer for several weeks, now, and I've put about 250 miles on it. I'm still getting 3 sensor "Not Ready" status reports: Catalyst; O2 Sensor; and EGR. The CEL light is not on, so everything must be working properly. Should I just drive it some more and and hope at least one of the problems will resolve itself? Anybody ever had this problem?

    You got a scanner??

On mine it will show you as the clears the "Readiness" stuff. You sure your giving it a complete drive cycles?? It doesn't even start looking at stuff on the '99 til it's warmed up. Guess it doesn't care while it's in a cold loop.

    YMMV

I have a scanner (just came today). I would have thought that after driving it a couple hundred miles I would have satisfied the drive cycles. Maybe not.

Just found some good info on the pointy board about the required drive cycles for the different year Miatas. It's a little complicated looking at it at first, but then it begins to make sense. It looks like my particular problem will be fixed by completing a MODE 3 drive. For a '96 that would include running the car in 3rd gear @ 13-36 mph for a total of 13 minutes, then increasing speed (still in 3rd) to25-30 mph for 20 seconds. There are actually 5 MODES to contend with, but not all YM do all of them. I'll do the ones that pertain to my '96 tomorrow and report back here.

ps: this is apparantly not an uncommon problem on 96-97 Miatas.

Correct. So I've only got to get one of the other 2 to the ready state.

Still no luck Drove the drive cycles that should have taken care of O2 sensor, but it still shows 3 not readys. Then I said WTH and drove it all around Cowtown on 820, and still no change.

That is odd, because obviously if something isnt working then it would give an error instead of not ready. From what I understand the drive cycles also include key cycles too. Maybe drive it on any errands or to work if you can and see if turning it on and off for a few trips helps.

I've put about 350 miles on it since converting back to OEM computer. I think I'm just going to have to be patient and keep on driving it as much as possible. I've got another 9 days before my 2 week grace period ends and the State inspection Nazis come after me.

Wow 350 miles already! Wonder why the evil 3 will not clear??

Would be worth resetting the ECU again to see if you can shake 1 of the evil 3 lose........

So from what you have read, how long is it taking folks for the ECU to clear out and get ready??

You think Miatamoto setting it on fire several times has anything to do with your issues??

Regardless of the facts, we can always blame Miatamoto for any and all problems I have with this car.

One guy on the pointy board had the problem for months. Which is strange, because I had absolutely NO problems with this the previous 2 years. After the last autocross in Nov. I would transfer back to OEM and then as Dec. rolled around I'd take it to my friendly Inspection Station and pass with no problem.
