Thread: Cars of the 80's

    Default Cars of the 80's

I was thinking about car styling today. Most would agree that car styling up until the 60s was great. The 50's was they high point in marketing stylish automobiles. Sure there were some clunkers but for the most part just about any car of those eras are desireable today. The 70's was the beginning of the car styling decline yet there are still some significant cars of that era as well.

The 80's though in my opinion is almost entirely devoid of any creativity and there are very few cars that stand out today.

The 90's started to reverse the trend of the boring, boxy 80's. The new century also has shown much promise in ingenuity and styling, often looking to the past for inspiration (not a bad thing again IMHO).

So will car's of the 80's ever be as highly desired as those of other decades? Probably not as wide spread as other decades although their may be a handful of models.
    ...and across the line.

I don't know but I saw a General Lee on my way home today. Complete with rebel flag.

The Mitsubishi Starion was always attractive. Same with the Toyota Celicas/Supras.

That was a 1969 Dodge Charger not exactly the 80's.

Were you even around in the 80's Nexus??

I still like the 308/328s from the 80's and strangely I have always had a thing for the Mustang GT design of the late 80's.

Yes I understand that the Dodge Charger is a 1960-70's car but how often do you see the Gen. Lee?

As far as the 80's go here are a couple of ones I like

Dang, POS took my DeLorean idea.

How about the Isuzu Impulse? The final Fiero was actually quite attractive. The 80's Dodge Daytona was attractive, although it was a . IROC Z Camaros were cool, but they required a mullet. The original Ford Taurus was great looking, as was the Merkur XR4Ti.

What about the Lotus Esprit? Okay it may have been late 70's design, but it still looks good to me. I still like the looks of the fore mentioned Mitsu Starion/Dodge Conquest.

How about the Dodge colt with the 8 speed dual stick transmision? JK

If we're going to talk about Panteras, Esprits, and Ferrari 308s (all of which were born in the '70s), I'm going to nominate A couple of my favorites from the '80s (and very, very late '70s):

Same could be said about the Ferari 308. Mmm, how nice a fiberglass 308 would be.

    Now back to the 80's...

The Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe and Lincoln Mark VII LSC were hot. I really liked the LSC.

The first and second generation Caddy Seville.

The Chevy Monte Carlo was cool in SS form.

    Honda Prelude 2.0 Si, anyone?

BMW E32. Also hard to beat the MB S-Class of the 80s. How about the 300E, too? Or even better, the 500E built by Porsche for MB. AMG Hammer.

I guess what I am trying to say is, the 80s were not so bad after all.

For those of us who are not Ricers this car is also known as a Toyota Corolla GTS.

Well if you call a Miata by NA, NB or NC (or even M1, etc), it's fair to call the Corolla an AE86 (or RX-7's as FB, FC, and FD). It's easier to call a car by chassis code than having to say a year, make/model and package name... When you say AE86, everybody knows what you're talking about. If you say Corolla, you get a lot of
